Fragile is the fourth studio album by the English progressive rock band Yes, released in the United Kingdom on 12 November 1971 and in the United States on 4 January 1972 by Atlantic Records. The record marked the studio debut of keyboardist Rick Wakeman, who replaced founding member Tony Kaye following the promotional tour for the band's breakthrough release, The Yes Album. The transition occurred during London rehearsals in August 1971, where internal friction over Kaye's reluctance to expand his instrumentation past the standard organ and piano culminated in his dismissal. Wakeman's classical training and fluency with electronic textures—including the Mellotron and Moog synthesizer—fundamentally expanded the band's sonic palette. To manage production time and high studio costs at Advision Studios, Yes split the album's concept: four tracks are collaborative, group-arranged pieces—including the landmark epics "Roundabout" and "Heart of the Sunrise"—while the remaining five serve as distinct solo pieces engineered to showcase the individual musical identity of each member.
