The Tortured Poets Department is the eleventh studio album by the American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift. It was released on April 19, 2024, through Republic Records, followed two hours later by the surprise release of a double-album edition subtitled The Anthology. Swift wrote and produced the album with Jack Antonoff and Aaron Dessner over a two-year period, including during the Eras Tour in 2023. An autobiographical album reflecting a period of personal upheaval and heightened fame, The Tortured Poets Department explores ill-fated romance and its resulting emotions, including grief, anger, longing, and delusion, through hyperbolic, confrontational, and self-aware lyrics that incorporate literary allusions. The standard edition, primarily produced by Antonoff, is largely minimalist synth-pop characterized by synthesizers, programmed drums, and sustained bass. Dessner principally produced The Anthology, which mostly consists of acoustic chamber pop and folk-pop ballads driven by piano and guitar. Elements of country, rock, and electronica are also interspersed throughout the record.
