Sumo Cyco is an empowering, fun, fierce, rambunctious rock outfit speared with punk, metal and pop in a visual package of WWE, comics, horror and Alice in Wonderland. Like rocker-girl clip art come to life, lead singer Skye Sweetnam is an anomaly in the hard rock world, a no-holds-barred, in-your-face explosion of colour amid black garb and testosterone. Over the past 13 years, the Canadian band — at its core Skye and co-writer/producer/guitarist Matt Drake — has self-released and produced three albums, 2014’s Lost in Cyco City; 2017’s Opus Mar, and 2021’s Initiation; toured Canada, the U.S., UK and New Zealand; and been covered in top press outlets Kerrang!, Revolver, Guitar World & Loudwire. Highlights include headlining tours in the U.S. and UK; support slots for Jinjer, Nonpoint, Buckcherry, Alien Ant Farm, CKY, The Birthday Massacre, and Chris Jericho’s Fozzy; playing to 10,000 people at UK’s Download Festival; sync placement in the MX vs ATV Legends video game and Don Cherry’s hockey highlights; over 12 million streams on Spotify, including three songs with over one million streams each. Obstacle after obstacle, Skye and Matt have hurled themselves over each hurdle, knowing their super fans are cheering them on. Through triumphs and failures, they have always had each other and the love of music to get them through. Without a doubt, their next record is the most evolved, and they are the most focused that they’ve ever been. Eyes on the prize, these Cycos are psyched.
