Josh Sager creates dark ambient electronica music, as well as music for film, game, and other forms of media. Employing modular and software synths, tape loops, generative music concepts, and field recordings, he is drawn to writing atmospheric, moody, highly-textured soundscapes. Sager spent his youth listening to metal and hard rock acts like Rush and Iron Maiden, studied classical music composition in college while being influenced by contemporary composers such as Bartók, Schönberg, and Stravinsky, and dove into fusion and jazz guitar with guidance from guitar masters Scott McGill and Jimmy Bruno. In the early 2000’s, Sager teamed up with a college friend to form the progressive rock band Din Within, and after a many-year ideation period they released their debut album in 2007 to positive worldwide reviews. But, it was a jam session with Sager's long time friend John Lewis (ksuhusk) that cemented his calling to ambient electronica. Pairing his knowledge of jazz theory and novel chord relationships with Lewis’ swirling pads, airy melodic lines, and percussive elements, Sager was immediately taken in by the possibilities of ambient music, and quickly saw that it was an art form where he could bring all of his musical influences and passions to bear. He hasn’t looked back, citing the works of ambient luminaries such as Loscil, Brian Eno, and Steve Roach, among others, as a major reason why he’s drawn to the genre.
