5 great Soviet pianists.................... Gilels and Richter were the 2 most known pupils of Neuhaus. Yakov Zak a prominent prof. at the Moscow Conservatoire along with Yakov Flier. Gilels often took classes for their pupils too. Yakov Zak premiered Kabalevskys F major sonata and duo partner Gilels during the war to boost morale. Yakov Flier was known not so much for his musicality and intellect but as his extra ordinary ability to evoke intense atmospheres ,produce his very own rich tone with huge dymanic contrasts. There are many more pianist around that time that deserve to be on the great Soviet list. Sokolov is now on there ,gladly is still alive has much of the Gilels tone and approach, indeed he worked with him too.Though the beauty for me is that though they have many similarities there tones vary slightly according to their touch. Do enjoy this group of pianists that have the grand way of playing and the steel like clarity wit the golden tones.Coupled with intense understanding of the musical text and line. But I chose just several for my list .
