When I first heard Roger Soyer and saw him perform in a video of the 1975 production of Gounoud's Faust as Mephistopheles I was amazed by his clear, expressive, resonant voice and compelling, elegant stage presence. After doing a little more searching, I was astonished that this extraordinary French operatic bass appears to be so little-known today. His repertoire included many of the great baritone/bass roles in opera; Don Giovanni, Philip II, Don Basilio, and of course, Mephistopheles. Please, take some time to discover this magnificent and undeservedly neglected opera singer.
