Ukrainian violinist Solomiya Ivakhiv undertook an important project for Ukrainian classical music in collaboration with the University of Connecticut, Academy of Arts and Sciences in US (UVAN) and Angelina Gadeliya, piano, recording eight Ukrainian composers, covering a period from 1914 to 2014 for a CD entitled, "Journey to Freedom-A Century of Ukrainian Classical Music". This recording project chronicles the journey of Ukrainian post-modern, neo-romantic, expressionist-modernist, and neo-folklorists of the 20th and 21st centuries, which have emerged and thrived professionally, despite the government oppression in Ukraine. The recording was made at the prestigious Academy of Arts and Letters in New York City and recorded by five-time Grammy Award-winner, Judith Sherman. Some of the pieces on the CD were written especially for Solomiya Ivakhiv as well as premiered by her. Yevhen Stankovych's Angel's Touch was commissioned by the Ukrainian Institute of America, premiered at Carnegie's Weill Hall MATI Series 25th Celebration in November 2013 and published by Lauren Keiser/Hal Leonard; Bohdan Kryvopust's "Capriccio" was premiered in Kyiv Composer's Union with Kyiv Kamerata, and Alexander Shchetynsky's “An Episode in the Life of a Poet” was premiered in Merkin Hall at the Kaufman Center in NYC on December 7, 2014, at Shevchenko's Bicentennial Celebration. The idea behind the project- recording music of the past 100 Years, is to bring awareness to the sophisticated culture Ukraine has to offer as well as to interest the international community in the music and culture from Ukraine.
