An Orthodox Advent Concert presented by the Choir of St. Mary's Orthodox Cathedral Saturday, December 9, 2017. This evening's concert tells the story of the birth of Jesus Christ using hymns and melodies from the Orthodox Church's liturgical choral tradition. The concert will take its audience on a journey through the liturgical year, beginning first with the words of the Angel Gabriel when he said to Mary, "Make ready to receive Christ!" all the way to the song of the angels in Bethlehem "Glory to God in the Highest!" The opening piece of the concert is an ode sung on March 25 for the fesast of the Annunciation, nine months before Christmas. Next, a selection of hymns from the days leading up to Christmas suggest that we have to become like the manger, preparing our lives and bodies to receive Jesus Christ. The concert then features hymns from Christmas itself, proclaiming that God Himself has become human, freeing us sin and death, and being given a path to eternal life through the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. The remaining selections sung this evening reflect the broad and diverse selection of Christmas carols found throughout the Christian world. No matter your background, the message of Christmas is filled with joy that God has become human so that we man receive Him into our lives, with the promise of particiaption in His resurrection and ultimately, eternal life in His Kingdom. Thank you for listening; have a Blessed Nativity and a Merry Christmas!
