The Real Book Solo Piano Project My mission is to record a solo piano interpretation of every tune in the Real Book (Vol. 1, 5th Ed). I also record tunes from other important fake books, like the further volumes of RB, Think of One, and more. Why the Real Book? While some people look down on it for its minor bugs or unusual tune choices, I see it differently. I truly admire the monumental effort the original authors put into this tome. There are hundreds of interesting tunes; many complicated arrangements were brilliantly reduced to and understandable skeleton. For me, its quirks are an essential part of its character, and the crazy selection of tunes is one of the things that makes it awesome. It’s more than a book of lead sheets; it’s an irreplaceable snapshot of a musical era. It's hard to imagine what jazz today would be without it. In this series, I take these pages as a departure point. I want to stay true to the composer's intent while finding my own voice. What you’ll find here: The Great Standards: Jimmy Van Heusen, Cole Porter, and the Songbook era. More contemporary tunes by Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, and Steve Swallow. Oddities, including tunes that were never recorded by their composers, as far as I can see. Bop & Monk: Deep dives into the jazz bible’s most iconic entries. 🎹 Note: Some tunes have MIDI files available, check the individual video descriptions. New tunes added regularly.
