Alexia - Mikis Theodorakis: One of my most important collaborations in life occurred in 1995 - my Music union with the Titan of Music in Greece and the world, Mikis Theodorakis. Mikis IS Greece.. musically, politically, poetically. Mikis put Music to the poems of some of our greatest poets: Nobel prize laureates George Seferis and Odysseas Elytis, Nikos Gatsos and many other brilliant talents. He is also a wonderful lyricist, orchestrator, thinker. I had the privilege of working with him in ancient Amphitheaters around Greece and to record a double album with 20 of his myriads of creative works. We traveled together with his popular orchestra, myself and the composer for over 30 concerts, having guest singers some of the most talented Greek singers. We would all sing together since Mikis' music unites and then at the end of each concert Mikis would get up and sing and speak to the multitude of people who gathered to hear his music and to be in his energy field. Through Mikis Theodorakis' Music and word, I got to know the heart of real Hellas, or Greece as it is called. I am grateful to the people and the circumstances who led me to work and sing with this brilliant mind and composer for a period of 10 years. For our album I invited 6 of the most talented, knowledgeable of orchestrators: Peter Massink, Fergus Currie, Christos Christofi, Dimitri Tsopanelli, George Zachariou, Antoni Donchev We worked with real orchestras and real instruments and in some of the songs Dimitris Tsopanellis only using his singing voice, constructed intricate orchestrations on some of the most loved songs by the composer. Fergus Currie accompanied me with just an acoustic bass at our rehearsal and then that orchestration of that song was created. Then Peter Massink and Fergus Currie worked together in creating magical string orchestrations for some other of the songs. Then Peter Massink, also a master of orchestration, masterfully created mystical orchestrations for many of the songs. The Jazz and Classical element is prevalent and then the Avant-garde element as well. On one of our recording studio days, the composer Mikis Theodorakis came to visit us to hear the Cd's progress and to offer his support and advice. He liked the orchestrations so much that he expressed the desire to sing on one of the songs, then I timidly asked him if he would want to improvise on one of my favorite songs of his, by Nobel laureate George Seferis: "Thalassines Spilies". He immediately took his place by the studio microphone. The engineer brought me another microphone and then Peter on the Soprano sax (Peter is a multi-instrumentalist) and Fergus on the piano(even though he is a bassist), me and Mikis began a variation on the main song.. It was a mesmerizing experience. Our improvisation was almost 15' long. I was thrilled, ecstatic at the whole experience though my record company commented on the duration of the song, that it was "too long" to be played on radio shows". 'Scuse me but in the midst and the Thrill of expression and creativity I cannot think of marketing.. I prefer to think of making History for the other generations to be inspired and empowered by: real music by real legends.
