I grew up in Maine, and started collecting records in high school, but until recently, I knew nothing about the rich legacy of '60s rock music recorded by Maine groups. The fact that my focus as a collector was on LPs and not singles might have had something to do with that, as only one group represented in this playlist actually released one (a second recorded an LP that remained unreleased until the 1990s). Unsurprisingly, perhaps, most of the groups represented here were from the more densely populated southern end of the state, but bands from Aroostook County, Mount Desert Island, Bangor, and the northwestern mill town of Rumford are also included. The styles represented here run the gamut from pre-Beatles instrumental rock to garage punk, folk-rock, pop-psych, and heavy/hard rock. Enjoy! (I should note that I don't own any of these records -- until recently, I had a copy of Fate's "Sgt. Death" -- and have downloaded the songs from other sources. I've also culled information on the groups as well as the graphics I've used from sites like Discogs, 45cat, and the Basement Walls. I will take credit, then, only for the selection and arrangement of the songs.)
