Discoteca del Cantar Popular (DICAP) was a record label founded by the youth section of the Chilean Communist Party (PCCh). It operated domestically between 1968-1973. It's Chilean headquarters was closed by the Pinochet dictatorship, but the label continued to operate in exile into the late 70s from its French subsidiary Canto Libre. This playlist of 187 songs represents samples from all 65 albums and 86 singles that DICAP and its domestic subsidiaries (Jota Jota, Peña de los Parra, Gente Joven, Tierra Tierra, UP, and CUT) released between 68-73. DICAP's roster included internationally recognized Chilean musicians and groups such as Victor Jara, Isabel Parra, Inti-Illimani, and Quilapayun. While much of this music is in the Folk-Revival style typical of Nueva Canción, DICAP's catalogue actually spans a wide range of styles that includes R'n'B, Folk, Funk, Tango, Jazz, Classical, Salsa, and much more. This playlist does not include releases by Peña de los Parra before its merger with DICAP or releases by DICAP's international subsidiaries in Uruguay, France, and the Netherlands during (most were just re-issues anyway) or after the 68-73 period. I hope you enjoy! Solidarity comrades!
