A bite-sized history of my claviorgan Prelude - A Vision Claudio Brizi plays Domenico Zipoli (1688 -1726) Partite in C Major From Sonate d'Intavolatura per Organo e Cimbalo (Rom, 1716) on his Pinchi-Barucchieri claviorgan. I would like to tell the neverending story of chimera-instruments, hybrids which go beyond their components' intrinsical limits. I was attracted by them already as a student, and the charm of their polyhedric nature was taking control of my mind during the years which saw the conception, projecting and building of my claviorgan. I was then diving in the study of that period of the 1500s, marked by a formidable creative ferment, when ingenious artists generated many sparks: even Leonardo da Vinci designed some visionary sound machines and improbable flutes. But the stunning work which attracted me the most was the "Angels' Concert" of 1535, a breathtaking fresco which fills the Saronno (near Milan) Sanctuary dome. Here, in a crescendo of shapes and colours, dancing "puttis", angelic choirs and musician angels parade in consorts and ensembles, some of which playing two instruments at the same time or dealing with polyphonic wind instruments and organs with impossible pipes. The creator of this triumph of Music, Gaudenzio Ferrari, paints a scene whose actors, in a never seen before carousel, mix real instruments with other ones conceived by an imagination that that gets to create chimeric comminglings: a string instrument resembling a Pan flute, a fiddle which contains a recorder... Pipes and strings: miraculous union! The impossible is represented, the sonority proclaimed: the instrument builders now only have to capture the celestial "Vision" and present it to humans! Thus I imagined the claviorgan was made, marvelous union between the harpsichord, which admirably articulates rhythm but isn't capable of sustaining sounds, and the organ, which boasts an extraordinary sound and dynamic palette but suffers from an inhuman, "supernatural" fixity. All are invited to follow me in the dreamy journey starting from the imagination of Gaudenzio Ferrari and his hundred Musician Angels... S e e y o u o n t h e s e c o n d c h a p t e r ! A r r i v e d e r c i a l s e c o n d o c a p i t o l o !
