He was barely a teenager when, mentored by Augustus Pablo, Hugh Mundell recorded some crucial tracks in the history of Roots Reggae. Several of these recordings were included on the essential album "Africa Must Be Free By 1983", released in 1978. In the following years he continued his close relationship with Augustus Pablo and began to produce his own material. He used the alias Jah Levi when recording in DJ style. Just as Augustus Pablo was his mentor, Hugh guided the first musical steps of future reggae star Junior Reid, who was still a child at the time. In 1980 he worked with Prince Jammy and in 1982 recorded the LP simply titled "Mundell" for top dancehall producer Henry "Junjo" Lawes. This album was released by Greensleeves Records. "The Blessed Youth" was only 21 years old when he became another fatal victim of an episode of violence in the ghetto.
