The waltz became a rage in Vienna with the advent of Johann Strauss Junior and the exuberant Viennese waltz. The British waltz meanwhile took on a different form, with the Valse Lente or the slow waltz. This playlist features the British waltz kings who mainly composed the slow waltz. Archibald Joyce (1873 – 1963) was a British light music composer known primarily for his early waltzes. Many of his waltzes were transcribed for the solo piano and widely sold in his day. He is known as the English Waltz King. Joyce pioneered the English Waltz, a slow waltz, which is different from the exuberant Viennese Waltz, which was in vogue at that time. Felix Godin, a pseudonym of Henry Albert Brown (c1864-1925), was an English composer of light music. He is largely forgotten, now remembered only for his "Valse Septembre", a piece of music supposedly played on the doomed Titanic, and made famous in the 1997 "Titanic" movie. Although an English composer, he assumed a French pseudonym, and his compositions had mostly French titles, because it was apparently fashionable to be French at that time. He composed a series of waltzes based on each month of the year.
