This playlist explores the bounds of electronic music to carve out a niche for some of the more intriguing and deviant expressions of the genre, primarily offshoots such as synthpop and minimal synth/minimal wave, looking at offbeat and far-out takes on the formula. That could mean the use of a rough and lo-fi production, a harsher sonic approach that draws from noise, experimentation with ambient and drone or dungeon synth textures, the embracing of post-punk, darkwave, coldwave as well as synth-punk, EBM and techno elements, the presence of industrial and power electronics overtones, or just some general weirdness. Featuring for the most part rather obscure modern releases alongside forgotten old gems, but also a few better-known classics.
