“Kendrick Lamar’s GNX—his surprise-release sixth studio album—marks a monumental shift in his career. It is his first album to be released outside of the Top Dawg Entertainment umbrella and follows a high-profile feud with Drake. For months, rumors circulated among fans about the album’s release, though none seemed to materialize. The first signal of new music releasing beyond Kendrick’s rap feud emerged in the “Not Like Us” music video—which briefly previewed “squabble up.” A month later, on August 25, 2024, Kendrick’s cousin uploaded an iMessage exchange with him in a soon-deleted X post, confirming the recording of a new album. On November 22, 2024, at 9:30 Pacific Standard Time, Kendrick released the album trailer to his YouTube channel. Thirty minutes later, he released the album to all platforms at random. Stylistically, GNX carries distinctive west coast cruiser vibes apropos of its cover art, featuring Kendrick leaning against a 1987 Buick GNX. In this case, “GNX” stands for “Grand National Experiment.” Kendrick makes distinct reference to this vehicle throughout the project.” - genius.com https://genius.com/albums/Kendrick-la...
