Composer, violinist, computer musician, and improviser Andrew May has spent two decades (on and off) wrestling with the aesthetic and practical issues of making chamber music with the computer, using the various Max-family graphic dataflow languages (currently Pure Data). His CD Imaginary Friends (Ravello Records) presents some snapshots of the first decade of this research. His latest thoughts on the subject take the form of works for violin and computer; sometimes the only morally acceptable choice is to experiment on yourself. May directs the Center for Experimental Music and Intermedia (which just celebrated its 50th birthday in 2013) at the University of North Texas, where he is Associate Professor of Composition.
