The fifth Pemulwuy National Male Voice Festival presented by Voices of Birralee and bringing together singers aged 9 - 80 from around Australia. 4 choirs were created in various strands - Treble Strand, Youth A & B Strands and an Adult Strand. Guest conductors rehearsed the groups together over two and a half days and then this finale concert was presented with our finale partners Qld Performing Arts Centre. This festival was the vision of Voices of Birralee's Founder and Artistic Director Julie Christiansen OAM who wanted to see boys and men encouraged to sing together and who wanted new music commissioned that would engage male singers. This 2023 finale concert saw the premiere of 5 new works all by Australian composers. The festival draws its name from a piece of music written by Paul Jarman entitled Pemulwuy that is inspired by the Bidjigal warrior Pemulwuy, who led resistance against the colonial settlers in the Eora nation (Sydney area).
