So, both music students and listeners can benefit by singing along or just listening and enjoying! The Nottu swarams (Note swarams) are a set of simple classic tunes/melodies/songs by Muthuswami Dikshitar, inspired by western/european tunes with divine sanksrit lyrics in 18th Century. Most of these songs are composed using Major scale notes or the plain notes (swara sthanas) of Sankarabharanam ragam, except a few where some additional notes have been used as well. They use simple 3-beat (triplet) and the usual 4 beat rhythms. These songs are amazing to listen to with beautiful tunes using plain notes and sanskrit lyrics and have universal appeal. For music students whether western or indian classical (carnatic or hindustani), these are amazing additions/tools at beginner/intermediate level stage, and to master the major scale or swara sthanams.
