Phillip Sear plays 'Skovblomster' ('Woodland flowers', 1882) a set of three short pieces by the Danish composer and priest Frederik Johannes Wiel-Lange (1849–1925). ---------------------------------------- Born in Viskinge on the island of Seeland (Zealand), Wiel-Lange earned his Licentiate of Theology from the University of Copenhagen in 1874, and in the same year entered the Copenhagen Conservatory as a student of Niels W. Gade and J. P. E. Hartmann. His teachers took such a keen interest in his talent that he was soon promoted to a professorship at the Conservatory. His early compositions included a concert overture in G major, performed at Copenhagen’s Tivoli in 1880, and ‘El jaleo de Xeres’, a concert work for soloists, choir, and orchestra; his other works are mainly songs and piano pieces. Wiel-Lange also contributed to Danish church music and musical education. He edited the second edition of Gebauer’s harmony exercise book and wrote an explanatory guide to it, reflecting his interest in the practical teaching of music theory. In 1877, he married the Danish pianist Minna Fries (born in Aarhus). Because of her delicate health, he had to leave the city to live in the countryside, where he served as a clergyman in Broost (a small town near d'Oester-Svenstrup). ----------------------------------------- Thumbnail image created with Picsart ( https://tinyl.co/4WqE ).
