A musical journey through the borderlands of Eastern Europe—from the shores and forests of the Baltic to the mountains of the Caucasus. These lands have stood for centuries at the meeting points of languages, religions, migrations and empires. Borders moved, rulers changed and communities were sometimes divided, yet songs continued to travel from one generation to another. This collection explores anonymous traditional lyrics, ancient poetic forms, work songs, laments, lullabies, wedding songs and songs of love, exile, resistance and remembrance. Each receives a new musical setting by Gerrit Stassyns while retaining the language, imagery and cultural character of its place of origin. The journey begins in Estonia with “Laula, laula, suukene”—“Sing, Sing, Little Mouth”—an old regilaul that invites the mouth, tongue, mind and heart to sing while life still permits them to do so. Further voices will gradually join our travelling chorus as the journey continues through the Baltic countries, the Slavic borderlands, Eastern Europe and the Caucasus. The music is accompanied by visual interpretations inspired by the landscapes, architecture, domestic surroundings, textiles, clothing and everyday lives of the cultures from which the songs emerged. These are not museum reconstructions, but respectful musical and visual encounters with traditions that deserve to be heard beyond their borders.
