BUNESSAN is a traditional Scottish Gaelic melody, named after the village of Bunessan on the Isle of Mull. It became widely known as a hymn tune through its association with Mary MacDonald’s Gaelic Christmas hymn, translated into English as Child in the Manger, and later achieved worldwide recognition as the tune of Eleanor Farjeon’s Morning Has Broken. This playlist brings together recordings from the Our Lady of Hope hymn library which use BUNESSAN, showing how the same distinctive melody has been used with different hymn texts.
