One of Mahler's favorite proteges, Willem Mengelberg (1871-1951) was in a class by himself. A master orchestra builder, he played an important part in raising some of the great orchestras, like The New York Philharmonic and the Concertgebouw, to the international fame they now enjoy. A romantic at heart, his performances are unique in their expressive musicality.
