About This Album: In 2023, I made my first free AI song called, Cringe Worth. It was an avant-garde experimental song using electronic sounds where I overdubbed my vocals and manipulated it to where you couldn’t tell what I was saying or singing. I wasn’t very impressed with it. Skip to 2025, and things slightly changed. Now you could tell AI whatever you want and it would spit out a song within minutes. For the first few dozen songs I tried with AI, I wrote them as pure comedy, something that I wouldn’t sing under usual circumstances. It just wasn’t serious stuff and I figured AI would be funnier in doing that kind of project. So, I wrote lyrics that was purely nonsensical and insane, and I had AI ‘sing’ them. With most of these songs, I wrote them in a matter of a couple minutes, about as long as it took AI to pop out a full song. My first “real” project with AI came in summer of 2025 where I used about a dozen poems I wrote and put it through AI, just to see what it would do. Most of the songs came back as somewhat unimpressive, but a couple of them stuck out as being interesting. This is when I realized that how I wrote poems was very different than how I wrote song lyrics. It was a totally different process for me. I decided, shortly thereafter, that I’d take several songs I had written, that was either never fully finished or was finished and hadn’t yet been recorded, and then run it through AI with all my prompts. With nearly every song, I plugged in the “commands” of how I wanted the song to sound, the progression, instruments, and even melody and riffs to a certain extent. I considered myself as the composer, arranger, and conductor and the AI as the musicians. At this particular part of the project, I decided to complete an album worth of material using only AI and the tools within its programming. I was somewhat impressed by how many of the songs came out nearly exactly the way I had written them in my head. It was as if AI started to get used to my actual style of music and was anticipating how I would do things. Still, some things didn’t come out quite like I wanted, so I had to do some serious re-editing and remixing in several places. AI doesn’t always want to sing certain words correctly, and I had to try and fix that issue, along with a few other minor issues, like adding or changing filler instruments or the proper key to a song. I believe AI would make a great tool for singer-songwriter/musicians in making demos of their songs, but I’m still a firm believer in making it with “real” musicians and/or performing and recording songs myself. It’s more fun that way, although I have to admit, I had some fun doing this particular project. If we can remember to use AI as an assistant or a tool to realize a song, I think it’s a great addition to the many things available to people (like using musical instruments and equipment and various analog or digital effects) that could help writers and musicians make and realize their music. AI can’t make music with a soul, but at the very least, it can guide various artists to reach a certain potential of their abilities that may have otherwise gone unnoticed or unknown. Lastly, speaking of abilities, I must also add disabilities to this description since I’ve become disabled in the last few years and find it very difficult to continue playing musical instruments, but I still have that songwriting desire to continue making music. With AI, I can still write and shape songs to exactly how I want and still have some fun in the process. So the older I get, the less disgruntled I feel about AI and what comes with it within the musical world.
