In 2014 Simone van Weerden won the international bandoneon solo competition Klingenthal and graduated her bachelor cum laude in that same year at the conservatory of Rotterdam. After going into depth in tango in Argentina, she started her master of music studies in 2017 where she combined tango with jazz. With Thomas Pol on double bass, Robert Koemans on piano and Niek de Bruijn on drums, Simone forms the NAOS Quartet. Four young musicians bring the Argentine tango to a new world in which the fusion of different influences is the main focus. With the ‘Nuevo Tango’ of Astor Piazzolla as a starting point, these musicians go even further and create new music where tango, jazz and improvisation meet. Something you don’t hear often on bandoneon. Amersfoort Jazz is featuring 350 different artists at 18 dedicated stages, proudly presenting living legends as well as young talents and international laureates, who are introduced to the audience and a worldwide festival scene. Each year, Amersfoort Jazz pays particular attention to World Jazz from a specific country abroad. Amersfoort is regarded as one of the cultural cities in the Netherlands. Its historic inner city, known for its well-preserved medieval walls, squares and monasteries, is the ideal place for a diverse and dynamic music festival like Amersfoort Jazz. In 2020 the festival was held online due to COVID-19. We proudly presented a varied program of World Jazz on November 20-22, 2020, live streamed from theater De Lieve Vrouw and De Observant in Amersfoort, The Netherlands. A worldwide audience enjoyed the concerts and broadcasts from the Amersfoort Jazz Café, free of charge, and people donated generously. Big thanks to all our viewers, participants, artists, stakeholders, photographers, technicians, volunteers and organizers. Together, we keep World Jazz alive!
