*(2004) ''23, Rue Boyer'' (CoraZong 255 044) (Released March 9, 2004) Michael de Jong The album ''23, Rue Boyer'' is a live solo album by the late Dutch-American singer-songwriter and blues guitarist Michael de Jong. It features intimate, emotionally raw acoustic performances that capture his characteristically intense vocal delivery. The album runs for nearly an hour (59 minutes and 43 seconds) and consists of 10 tracks. All songs were written by Michael de Jong, except for a highly unique, altered-lyric version of Bob Dylan's classic "All Along The Watchtower". Due to financial disputes regarding distribution and author rights with the Spanish-headquartered organization representing the label, Michael de Jong reportedly received almost no royalties for this release. Keeping true to his fiercely independent nature and dedication to his listeners, he later placed his out-of-print albums online for free on his official site so his fans could continue to appreciate the music. That weathered face on the cover speaks volumes. The deep lines etched in his face, the tousled hair falling over his eyes, and the AIDS ribbon on his right shoulder tell the story of the Frisian-American known as Michael de Jong. Wild stories circulate about him, but after constantly balancing on the edge of the abyss, he now seems intent only on warning the world about the seamy side of human existence. Time is running out for De Jong; after kicking his drug and alcohol habits, he was diagnosed with HIV. Michael de Jong is at the mercy of fate. The only thing keeping him going is telling his story through song. You might well run into him on any given rainy evening in a village pub, singing his honest songs about life to passersby. De Jong is a blues musician by trade, but on the live album *23, Rue Boyer*, he appears as a seasoned troubadour singing about his turbulent life. For fans of stripped-down singer-songwriters—artists like Townes Van Zandt, David Olney, and John Prine come to mind - ''23, Rue Boyer'' is a better choice than De Jong’s studio albums, where the lengthy tracks and faster-paced material can sometimes be a bit jarring. The only time Michael de Jong strays from this path is with his gritty version of Bob Dylan’s "All Along the Watchtower" - the only track on this live album that doesn't immediately stand out for its beauty.
