A DJ career that began in 2023 has already seen Gonzalo Cotroneo become a regular across the renowned clubs and venues of his Buenos Aires hometown, alongside a host of familiar names. A move towards studio production has subsequently yielded a rapidly evolving catalogue of high-quality music since mid-2024 and a debut on D.J. MacIntyre’s SLC-6 Music. Indeed, a series of original EPs have graced such esteemed imprints as YOMO Records, SINCITY and Univack, while work with fellow countryman and meanwhile newcomer Casnik has witnessed well-received releases on Balkan Connection, Cary Crank’s Sunexplosion, and Forty Cats’ PURRFECTION. Opening the EP, “Thrill” is a smooth continuation of the Gonzalo Cotroneo canon, as familiar rhythmic tropes can be heard across the 7-minute piece. A rolling rhythmic foundation is ably abetted by a syncopated bass groove as various effects and subtle motifs can be heard. Towards the midpoint, a filtered arpeggio comes to the sonic foreground in a dancefloor-friendly manner and spine-tingling panache. Building to a satisfying denouement, “Thrill” erupts into a wall of sound where rhythm and melody combine in effortless fashion to create a devastating floor-filler that is a sure-fire success wherever it lands. “Power” continues the journey with a pounding rhythmic display and light percussive touch. Developing with the same ease as the opener, a popping, ticking backdrop provides the perfect sonic canvas for a sweeping array of melodic textures to make their presence felt across a gradually evolving landscape. Hitting a fizzing stripped-back breakdown, a hypnotic drop sees a cleverly utilized vocal loop create a superb new melody that drives mesmerizingly across the second movement. The result is a dramatic and impressive piece of modern production wizardry. Closing the EP, “Dark Rain” is a chunky rhythmic affair that elegantly builds courtesy of a deep bassline groove and an evolving suite of dynamic effects. Full of vibrant energy, crunchy percussive hits pan the stereo spectrum while rippling arpeggio sequences and synth stabs create more airy moments. Building to a powerful crescendo at the breakdown, the second half quickly hits the heights with a smooth filtered synth stab and a return to the bass and rhythm of earlier phases.
