When one thinks of Ghazals, two names spring to mind: Mehdi Hasan and Ghulam Ali. These two epitomise the perfection to which the art of ghazal-singing has been taken in Pakistan. And yet, each has his own characteristic quality which sets him apart from the other. Ghulam Ali's strength lies in the exceptional mellifluousness of his voice and the meaningfulness with which he invests each word by means of his musical expression. The result is spell-binding and aesthetically most satisfying. Ghulam Ali had his training in classical music from such masters as Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan and Ustad Mubarak Ali Khan. He began his professional career on Radio Pakistan in 1960 and soon endeared himself to connoisseurs of ghazals. Today he is an eminent concert, radio and television personality, and many consider him to be one of the few singers in the world who know what ghazal-singing is all about.
