For this project, I wanted to do a more "straight-forward" remix. Eddie Kramer did a fantastic job of capturing some great drums and guitar sounds. Although it's been a fan favorite many felt the overall sound was a bit flat and not all it could have been. Paul has even recently spoken about his desire to remix it himself. I did a full audio separation (kick, snare, toms, hi-hat, crashes, ride, bass, acoustic guitars, electric guitars, lead and backing vocals) and used no outside drums samples for this album. I did borrow some things from one song for another to even out the sound throughout, but everything you hear unless otherwise mentioned below comes right from the original tracks. I tried to make everything clear and audible while capturing the sound of the classic line-up with warm 1976 analog audio. Basic changes are that I added a bit of grit to the bass to make it closer to Gene's live sound, removed some of the reverb from the vocals, compressed the guitars to enhance the distortion a little and added a few accents drum accents and cymbals to some songs to make them more dynamic and more like the way Peter played them live. All-in-all, it's probably as close to a real remix as possible without access to the actual multitrack tapes. This album was a return to form after the more "experimental" DESTROYER album and represents KISS just after gaining super-star status. Some fans find certain arrangements to be a little "rushed" not unlive DRESSED TO KILL, which makes sense considering the pace and frequency the band were releasing new material at that time. I have used some "artistic freedom" to replace the fade-outs on almost every song with hard endings or extended fades to let everyone hear all of the improvised playing and singing that was hidden in those fades. All of these changes come at the end of the songs, so hopefully it will not take away from the main song arrangements. There are a few more easter eggs as well like Paul's "Take Me" count-in from the demo, Gene's backing vocals from the "Baby Driver" demo, Paul's live backing vocals on "Hard Luck Woman", a bit of Paul's electric guitar blended in on "I Want You" along with the extended riff before the solo and more. The biggest changes are to the song "See You In Your Dreams". Gene has always said this song didn't really turn out how he had imagined it and even re-recorded it for his solo album less than 2 years later. For this version I have combined elements of both along with some added hand claps and percussion to give it more of a "gospel revival" feel which I think maybe gene was going for on his solo album. I have also incorporated the intro from his solo album version and used his solo album vocals to extend the 2nd verse and some other changes Gene made for that recording. If this doesn't suit your taste, I have also included the original arrangement as a bonus track. "Calling Dr. Love" also appears twice with the main version including Sean Delaney's Double Platinum intro and has the beginning arranged more like the way the band always played it live. In addition to some minor drum changes and a hard ending, I have decided to use several live backing vocals to make the chorus sound more like the band singing instead of the falsetto and spoken voices used on the original call-back parts. I also included a bonus track which is the original RARO arrangement, original backing vocals and fade out. "Hard Luck Woman" has 2 bonus mixes. The "electric version" has the acoustic guitars removed and replaced with Ace and Paul's tracks from ALIVE II. I also arranged the beginning and ending to be like the live version. I always enjoyed both versions and now we can hear a "studio" version of both. For the 'acoustic" mix, I borrowed the finger-style guitar arrangement from a You-Tuber going by the name "Wyngie J Mammschtein". I made some edits to his great version and added a piano arrangement to it. It's such a great song and it works in many styles, so rather than a simple mix with everything but the vocal and guitar removed, I decided to make a little more interesting version.
