Late Trane Jean-Luc Oboman Fillon: Hautbois, Hautbois d'amour et Cor Anglais Paul Hanson: Basson & Electronics Jarrod Cagwin: Percussions 360° Late Trane is a one-of-a-kind chamber jazz trio, bringing together internationally renowned jazz musicians on oboe/English horn, bassoon, and Middle Eastern percussion to create a unique chamber jazz experience inspired by John Coltrane’s final spiritual period. The collaboration between an oboist and a jazz bassoonist of international stature is a unique event in the history of contemporary jazz. For many years, Jean-Luc Oboman Fillon in Europe and the American Paul Hanson have each developed, in their own distinctive ways, an improvisational language entirely dedicated to instruments historically underrepresented in jazz: the oboe, the English horn, and the bassoon. In 2007, during a tour of the United States, their first musical encounter in Austin, Texas, immediately revealed an artistic synergy: beyond instrumental virtuosity, the two musicians share a common sonic quest rooted in improvisation, breath, timbre, rhythmic freedom, and the spiritual exploration of sound. From this encounter, Late Trane was born. More than a tribute to John Coltrane, the project continues his final musical quest: that of a jazz liberated from traditional harmonic frameworks, open to world music, trance, spirituality, and new soundscapes. Coltrane never ceased to explore new timbres and new musical forms. His interest in Eastern traditions, his admiration for the shehnai master Ustad Bismillah Khan, his artistic affinity with Yusef Lateef—himself an oboe and bassoon player—and the use of the tampura in *Africa/Brass* all resonate naturally with the world of Late Trane. With the arrival of globetrotting percussionist Jarrod Cagwin, the duo becomes a veritable sound laboratory where free improvisation, organic rhythms, circular breathing, subtle electronics, and the rich textures of double-reed instruments blend together. The absence of a traditional harmonic context opens up a unique musical space where the timbres of the oboe, English horn, and bassoon become living matter, creating immersive, meditative, and intensely expressive music. Through original compositions and improvisations, Late Trane is forging a deeply original path in contemporary jazz—at the intersection of creative jazz, improvised chamber music, and sonic exploration. Late Trane is a unique chamber-jazz trio bringing together two of the rare internationally recognized jazz improvisers on oboe and bassoon: French oboist Jean-Luc Oboman Fillon and American bassoonist Paul Hanson. Joined by percussionist Jarrod Cagwin, the ensemble explores the spiritual and sonic legacy of late Coltrane through an immersive musical language built around double reeds, circular breathing, subtle electronics and free improvisation. Far beyond a tribute project, Late Trane opens a unique sonic territory where oboe, English horn, bassoon and percussion merge into a contemporary chamber music, deeply expressive and transcendent musical experience.
