Here are chorales from Bach's Cantatas as well as chorales Bach harmonized in the "C.P.E. Bach Collection." As a piano teacher and pianist, I can say with all honesty that one is not a complete pianist until one is able to play at least a dozen Bach chorales with the following traits: 1) a smooth, legato, and cantabile touch; 2) intelligent fingering; 3) musical phrasing; 4) a steady tempo with slight ritardandos usually at the ends of phrases; 5) clean pedaling. Bach chorales are so important for pianists that I spend many hours transcribing them for pianists with easy-to-read manuscripts.
