Why release the album 'Cabinet of Curiosities' in five parts? Because this is not what you’d call a traditional album. It's the result of an idea that's been developing for almost ten years in the mind of an artist known for pushing the envelope and breaking boundaries. Cabinet of Curiosities is one album, divided into five volumes (or mini-EPs) that together form a whole, in the same way that various pieces of a puzzle form one image. Each “volume” is a collection of songs of a different musical style: blues and gospel, folk, country noir, rock and soul, even trip-hop and nu-jazz. Each one has its own character and distinctive sound — which is why Tori wanted each volume to have its own cover, featuring an object from the "cabinet" that relates to the songs’ lyrics. These songs are like a mirror that reflect the complex world around us: the fractured era in which we live, with all its good and bad, light and darkness. The lyrics explore themes such as social expectations, religion, family, technology, depression, death, politics, fear, the fight for justice and against fascism, love, and heartbreak. In short, everything that shapes our complex, painful, and beautiful lives. 'Cabinet of Curiosities' is also the result of overcoming some difficult years: between Tori’s own health issues and the general global chaos, she found herself doubting whether it even made sense to continue making music at all. This album is her answer to the question: no, it doesn’t make sense. But we do it anyway, because in times like these, we need art, music, inspiration, and human feeling more than ever. Why “Cabinet of Curiosities”? The album title was inspired by the collections of natural specimens by the same name that were popular in Renaissance Europe. These collections of strange, absurd, mysterious, beautiful, and unique specimens were designed to provoke wonder and curiosity. It was how people hundreds of years ago, tried to explain the natural world to themselves, and life in general: by building a miniature representation of it. It’s the perfect metaphor for this multifaceted project.
