This will, I believe, be the first time anyone has tried to create a playable version of the roud folk index. I will try to walk the fine line between choosing the best rendition of each song and not letting my personal taste in music cloud my judgement. The roud folk index is a huge repository of folk songs in the English language. It has many quirks, for example, there just is no roud number 86, it just goes 84, 85, 87, 88.. Most of the songs have at least two names, sometimes upwards of ten. So what you recognise as one song may be on this playlist under another name, so if you want to find a particular song on this list, find its alternative names first. A great many of the songs have no recorded rendition yet, so you will see gaps. For example, Roud 94 might not have a recording on youtube so the playlist will just from 93 to 95. Or even in some instances, there might be huge gaps, 30 songs in a row might not have recording, or there might be one recorded song out of ever 5 for a while. To this end, I will try to make the playlist as complete as I can. If there is only one recording of a song, it will go in, even if it's awful. Because of all this, you will will not be able to search the list by number - roud number 200, for example, will not be song number 200 on the playlist. If you want to hear Roud number 200, go to vwml.org and in the search bar, type "rn200" and observe all the names of that song. If there is a version that song on youtube, it WILL be on the playlist, as I take great care in trying to find the songs, even if that means typing in every single name of one song into youtube and going through all the results. I have searched for the songs and put them in one place so you don't have to search. That is the reason for the existence of this playlist. And remember, compiling the roud folk index is an ongoing process. Lost songs are being discovered and added to the index, as are new folk songs. I will add these if and when they come up on the index. The playlist will be in several parts, as Youtube only allows 5,000 videos per playlist. Enjoy. Jack
