This playlist contains a collection of prayers and hymns performed during the liturgy (especially the mass) according to the rite of the Antiochene Syriac Maronite Church. Our main purpose is to attach to each of these videos the original lyrics in the Syriac language, accompanied by an English (almost literal) translation. Since a large number of the faithful have not yet acquired the reading of the Syriac language, we have sought to teach the pronunciation of the lyrics through the Latin alphabet. Here is the transliteration system we have adopted: For the 22 consonants: 1. Olaf: not pronounced unless vocalized 2. Bet: b 3. Gomal: g (plosive), ġ (fricative) 4. Dolat: d 5. He: h 6. Waw: w 7. Zayn: z 8. Ḥet: ḥ 9. Ṭet: ṭ 10. Yūd: y 11. Kof: k (plosive), ḫ (fricative) 12. Lomad: l 13. Mīm: m 14. Nūn: n 15. Semkat: s 16. ‛E: ‛ 17. Fe: f 18. Ṣode: ṣ 19. Qūf: q 20. Rīš: r 21. Šīn: š 22. Taw: t For the 5 vowels: 1. Ftoḥo: a 2. Rboṣo: e 3. Zqofo: o 4. Ḥboṣo: ī (accompanied mostly by Waw) 5. ‛ṣoṣo: ū (accompanied mostly by Yūd) Remarks: 1. Syllables are hyphenated, with each syllable containing a single vowel. 2. If a word ending with an unvocalized letter precedes a word beginning with a vocalized Olaf, then the vowel carried by the Olaf is transmitted directly to the unvocalized letter. Example: « bar a-lo-ho » is pronounced « ba-ra-lo-ho ». 3. If two unvocalized letters meet, it is preferable, in order to facilitate the pronunciation, to vocalize the first one with the short vowel "e". Example: « Et-ra-ḥam ‛layn » is pronounced « Et-ra-ḥa-me‛-layn ».
