From the album: "Dr. Leland B. Sateren, a graduate of Augsburg College, received his master’s degree from the University of Minnesota in 1943. He returned to Augsburg in 1946 and has directed the Choir since 1950. He served as chairman of the Department of Music from 1950 until 1973. Honored with a Doctor of Humane Letters degree from Gettysburg College and a Doctor of Music degree from Lakeland College, Dr. Sateren’s teaching and directing reach not only many sections of the United States, but aboard as well. Together with Knut Nystedt, he conducted Norway’s first choral school. King Olav of Norwar conferred the Saint Olaf Medal on him in recognition of his contributions to Norwegian music in the United States. He received the first F. Melius Christiansen Award from the Minnesota Chapter of the American Choral Directors Association. Dr. Sateren spent the 1975-76 academic year in Norway where he served as choral director at the Conservatory of Music in Bergen. His stay in Norway followed a 1975 tour by the Augsburg Choir of that country as part of the opening ceremonies of the Sesquicentennial celebration which marked the 150th anniversary of Norwegian immigration to the United States. A leading choral conductor and composer, Dr. Sateren has published over 300 choral works in addition to books and articles for professional publications. Wide interest in the field of music is evidenced by his professional memberships in the Music Educator’s National Conference, the Minnesota Music Educators’ Association, the Hymn Society of America, and his work as a member of the Inter- Lutheran Commission on Worship. THE COVER reproduces a section of detail from Phillip Thompson’s 'Abstraction for a Musical Idea.' AUGSBURG CHOIR PERSONNEL 1978 – 79 Season Dr. Leland B.
