In the mid-1980s teurer denn je belonged to the musical contingent of the Prenzlauer Berg scene. Apart from the art historian Christoph Tannert as sometime singer and the poet Leonhard Lorek as text supplier, the band consisted of Michael Dubach (formerly M.F. Zickert) and the brothers Bert and Ulf Wrede, all students at the Hanns Eisler School of Music in East Berlin. The 1986 album’s eight numbers were recorded on a four-track deck in two rehearsal-room sessions with different lineups, and were then circulated on cassette. The cassette cover made use of a band poster designed by the Leipzig artist Michael Kunert on the initiative of Christoph Tannert.
