Phillips International Records is a sub-label of Sun Records started by Sam Phillips on September 3, 1957 and it operated until 1963. The design had the whole label as blue with geographic distortions, a subdued blue map of the world (with most of Europe and all of Asia conspicuously missing). Phillips International logo at the top of the label that reads: Sam C. Phillips International Corp. And is printed between the red-white-blue pennant. The fine print on the bottom of the label restricted its reach to New York, Memphis and Hollywood. The original Phillips International label issued singles in a PI 3516 up to PI 3586 series. Based at 706 Union Avenue in Memphis, Tennessee, the label was home to the million-selling "Raunchy" (PI 3519) by Bill Justis and His Orchestra, who later became a major player in arranging and conducting in Nashville, Tennessee. Carl Mann had hits with "Mona Lisa" (PI 3539) and "Pretend" (PI 3546) in 1959, and Charlie Rich recorded "Lonely Weekends" (PI 3552) for the label in 1960. The first Phillips International release (PI 3516) extended the Sun career of Buddy Blake Cunningham. Phillips International Records was dissolved in 1963 after Philips Electronic group in Holland complained about the similar name.
