This playlist is a collection of tunes from the Arnold Munkel Collection, performed by Beth Hoven Rotto on fiddle, Jon Rotto on guitar, and Nate Gibson on bass. The videos were recorded by Caitlin Vitale-Sullivan and John Walker and were made as part of a Musician-in-Residence program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the spring of 2022. The Nordic Folklife Project, the Center for the Upper Midwestern Cultures (CSUMC), Mills Music Library, the Mead Witter School of Music, and the German, Nordic, Slavic+ Department at UW-Madison collaborated on this residency, which resulted in Hoven Rotto transcribing approximately 80 tunes from the Arnold Munkel Collection at the Mills Music Library https://digital.library.wisc.edu/1711.... The Munkel Collection consists of hundreds of recordings of live Norwegian American old-time music performances in the Driftless area, particularly surrounding Spring Grove, MN and Decorah, IA, where Hoven Rotto lives. We are grateful for Beth Hoven Rotto's work in identifying and making these melodies more accessible to musicians and dancers alike, to Jon Rotto for his musical support and expertise, to the staff at the Mills Music Library for making their collections available, to all the musicians of the Scandinavian American Old-time Dance Music Ensemble, to graduate student workers Caitlin Vitale-Sullivan and John Walker, and to everyone who played a role in making this Musician-in-Residence program a success.
