KHYI 95.3 FM The Range was a staple during my drives to and fro for work on the highways of the DFW Metromess in the early 2000s. DJ/PD Bruce Kidder (RIP), DJ Brett Dillon and the rest of the staff introduced me to some of the best Texas Country, Progressive Country, Alt-Country, Americana, Outlaw, Bluegrass, and Honky Tonk music of the time and earlier. Kidder especially put in some mighty fine music and introduced me to the joys of his Railroad Montages (started when a regular caller phoned in when a train passed his back window) or Trucker Montages (which always had to end with "Roll On Big Mama" by Joe Stampley). Bruce often claimed to be the son of Buck Owens, Mighty Merle Haggard or Johnny Cash depending on whose song he was fixing to spin. A lot of this music is also played on community radio KNON 89.3 FM The Voice of the People on a program that runs 4-6 PM daily called Texas Renegade Radio. There are some amazing DJs on that station as well especially Mark Mundy on Fridays, Obie on Tuesdays, Ranger Randell on Mondays. I miss Mark Ivey (RIP) who used to be the host on Mondays.
