Back in April, I was given the opportunity to for my final assignment in my second year of Technical Theatre to work on a production of 'The Tempest' in Crewe. The turnaround from design to performance dates were shorter than I had previously experience in college (a little over two weeks), in addition to me travelling by train 3 hours per day to and from Crewe during the course of the production. But despite that, I wanted to do something that allowed for more creative freedom and which had a work environment more closely associated to the industry before I left. It was a risk for a multitude of reasons, but they definitely paid off. The production team in Crewe were so welcoming that I was able to adapt better to the work environment there. Ash, who was in charge of all of the technical-related roles (beside sound and the camera work), was a true role model in how to act and behave when on site, along with knowing when to have a laugh, he was quite informative on all things technical-related, and taught me a lot of new skills that I hope to improve upon in the future (for instance, utilizing OSC - Open Sound Control - to execute lighting and AV cues from QLab). Liz, the Director of 'The Tempest,' is probably one of the kindest people I've worked with, and allowed for a lot of freedom in terms of the sound design in relation to the theming of the performance. André and Léandre (two students under Ash) were also generally great and friendly people to work with, with André in particular contributing a lot to the foley utilized for the sound. Personally, this has probably been my favourite production to work on thus far in my career; not only because of the amazing people I worked with, but because of the risks taken in grabbing this opportunity that more than paid off. I feel like I developed my sound design and foley work substantially during my short time in Crewe, and I hope to work on more creatively fulfilling productions in the future.
