"Set Me As a Seal" is drawn from René Clausen's cantata A New Creation, and has become one of the composer's most performed and most deeply cherished choral works. The text comes directly from the Song of Solomon (Song of Songs 8:6–7): "Set me as a seal upon your heart, as a seal upon your arm, for love is strong as death. Many waters cannot quench love; neither can the floods drown it." The story behind this music is profoundly personal. René Clausen and his wife had already suffered three miscarriages when their fourth child — later found to be perfectly healthy — was lost following a medical procedure gone wrong during pregnancy. In the aftermath of that grief, Clausen turned to the poetry of the Song of Solomon, finding in its ancient language of love and unquenchable bond a vessel for what words alone could not carry. The result is a piece of rare emotional depth — spare, luminous, and tender — that singers and audiences around the world have found profoundly moving, particularly in moments of loss, remembrance, and sacred reflection. René Clausen (born 1953) is an American composer and conductor emeritus of The Concordia Choir at Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota. He holds a Doctor of Musical Arts in choral conducting from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and is a respected guest conductor and lecturer across more than 15 US states. His recording Life & Breath: Choral Works by René Clausen received three Grammy Awards at the 55th Grammy Awards in 2013. 📋 All voice parts for Set Me As A Seal — Practice the soprano, alto, tenor, and bass parts: 💛 Enjoying this track?
