Elizabeth Shepherd’s 7th album ‘MONTREAL’ (Pinwheel Music) is a vibrant and personal ode to her hometown. Written over a five-year span, during which time she interviewed people at random, who had one thing in common: being Montrealers, she collected of all kinds of tales - humorous, sobering, bizarre... From there, she selected the interviews which would serve as inspiration for the album songs. Each song tells someone's story and refers to a specific location in Montreal. From there, the project ballooned; she placed each song location on a map and traced the itinerary in an order that would place them within walking distance of each other. In the 50 minutes it takes to listen to the songs, listeners could also physically move through each of the places the songs are about. To bring the experience to life for anyone who can't be in Montreal to "walk the album”, Elizabeth teamed up with Montreal videographer Stefan Verna to shoot a short film for each tune, set in the location the song is about. After collaborating with dancers, choreographers, historians, archivists, authors, musicians, boxers, club owners, fishermen - Montrealers of all stripes – the end result is a collection of tales that highlight a lesser known Montreal. Here they are. Enjoy.
