Recording at Studio One felt surreal because many historic pieces of music were recorded in that room including the themes from The Godfather and the original Mission Impossible as well as songs by Frank Sinatra. When talking with the director about the tone of the music, we decided to go for something more abstract in terms of harmony and structure. This resulted in music that mainly consisted of slow string passages with some detuning, double bass solos, a chaotic texture with wind instruments, and vocals. Since the characters of the film are from the 1930s, I decided to incorporate jazz instruments such as upright bass, muted trumpets, and tenor saxophone to evoke that sound but not write jazz. Additionally, to evoke the feeling of that time period, I opted to record the strings with vintage ribbon microphones.
