Death Grips is a critically acclaimed and publically elusive punk rock/hip-hop Sacramento, California band formed in 2010. Consisting of childhood neighbors Zach Hill and Stefan Burnett, the band's music has been described as combining punk rock, hip hop and noise. In reality real mental instability is an influence of their music due to their personal experiences with friends and family with poverty and criminal activity. A sampling based group, on occasions they literally record things that interest them. Not only has Stefan made music and written music his entire life but as a true renaissance man he is a very active painter his spare time and his apartment is stacked with paintings all around. Their first released EP, "The Money Store" was influenced by an actual loan facility called The Money Store. According to the band, "The Money Store makes no sense, right? You go there to spend money. You don't go there to get money. That's the point and the absurdity of money". This quote clearly explains the bands decision to cancel a highly anticipated international tour to support the record so that they could finish their album No Love Deep Web which angered bother their label and their fans. This second album has been met with strong attention from online media groups, largely due to its sexually explicit album cover, a picture of an erect penis with the album title written on it. The band has claimed that this penis belonged to Zach Hill. Music critics have praised the new album's complexity and stripped-down sound. It is this commitment to their art and music that Afropunk salutes Death Grips as a true original. Afropunk picks: (1) The Fever (2) System Blower
