Montreal-based pianist and composer Jean-Michel Blais is signed to Arts & Crafts and Mercury kKXx (Decca). Since his debut album Il (2016), named one of Time magazine’s Top 10 albums of the year, his music has reached an international audience, amassing over 375 million streams worldwide. Trained in performance at the Conservatoire de musique, he developed a personal and expansive language where piano, electronics and orchestral textures coexist in a fluid dialogue. A member of the LGBTQ+ community and living with Tourette’s syndrome, he draws from his experience as a social worker to create deeply human music rooted in sensitivity, presence and empowerment. His five albums have earned critical acclaim from Pitchfork, the Fader and le Figaro. On stage, he performs solo, with ensembles or alongside orchestras, in venues such as Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw and London’s Southbank centre, as well as at large outdoor events, including a concert for over 40,000 people at the Montreal International Jazz Festival. Also active as a composer for screen, he won a Cannes Soundtrack Award for Xavier Dolan’s Matthias & Maxime and created the score for Moment Factory’s Wonderfall installation at Singapore’s Changi Airport. His work has appeared in the Netflix series The Brothers Sun, in campaigns for Tudor and Louis Vuitton, and in figure a skating performance at the Milano-Cortina Olympics. Following a residency at the Arvo Pärt centre in Estonia, he is preparing to release his next album.
