Pairing the reflective insight of a roots poet with the edgy intensity of raw alt-rock, Sony Music Nashville artist Zach John King is pushing country in a brand new (yet-strangely-familiar) direction – straight toward the truth, no matter where it leads. Raised in Fayetteville, Georgia and a lyricist first (with multiple generations of poets in the family), King grew up old school but dreaming of escape. A fan of George Jones, Otis Redding, The Police, Third Eye Blind, and Biz Markie, he fronted an indie-rock band through college before moving to Nashville in 2021, inspired to explore his country roots. His minimalistic country-meets-rock sound resulted in his first solo track in 2023 – “Just Missed You,” an audacious collision of styles – and a run of independent singles followed. In 2024, he broke out with “Wannabe Cowboy,” a less-is-more ballad that stands in bold contrast to country’s chest-thumping anthems. It’s garnered 3.4 million streams and landed on Spotify’s New Boots, Fresh Country, and Next From Nashville. Most recently, King released his EP Slow Down on May 23, led by the title track with 5 million global streams and major playlisting on Spotify and Apple Music. With 24.7 million career streams, “I Deserve A Heartbreak” now spinning on The Highway, and a packed tour schedule, King’s 2025 is off to an exciting start.
