Born Zibokwakhe Johnstone Mnyandu in 1963 at Umkomaas on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast, Phuzekhemisi, whose name translates as "Drink at the Chemist", has become a musical activist for peace through his traditional Maskandi sound. His lyrics, rich with political commentary, boldly address issues affecting KZN communities and challenge entrenched systems of tribal chieftainship and hostel leadership. Though his work was once banned in some hostels in Zululand, Phuzekhemisi remained steadfast in his mission to promote unity and peace. His groundbreaking approach not only urbanized Maskandi but also brought it into the mainstream, highlighted by his celebrated duet album with renowned Ndebele musician Nothembi, a beautiful celebration of cultural diversity.
