Lance Vantile Whitfield pushes the boundaries of Smooth Jazz, blending classic Funk with elements of R&B and Nu-Soul to create a signature sound all his own. On his latest release, FreeLance, Whitfield co-wrote and co-produced every track—many alongside longtime collaborator and friend DeYon Dobson—delivering a rich, immersive listening experience that reflects his wide-ranging musical influences. Creativity runs deep in Whitfield’s roots. He is the son of Barbara Grant and Vantile Whitfield, the legendary “Dean of Black Theatre,” who mentored generations of actors from Los Angeles to Washington, DC. Lance’s musical journey began at age 13 with a Christmas gift—a bass guitar—which he honed alongside his cousin Gordon. The two quickly developed their craft, performing in various local bands. Whitfield and Dobson have since produced for an impressive roster of artists, including Sue Ann Carwell, Will Wheaton, Charlie Wilson, The Gap Band, Theo Forsett, Snoop Dogg’s Doggyland, and Jaleesa Small, as well as remixing for artists like Shabba Ranks and Patra for The Addams Family Values soundtrack. Beyond music, Whitfield is an accomplished graphic designer and art director, leading his own firm, LWD (Lance Whitfield Designs). His visual work spans film, stage, and television, including major productions such as the Essence Awards and NAACP Image Awards.
