Built around the musings of multi-instrumentalist Jorge Rodrigo Azanza, The Yorks encapsulates a dreamy vision of Los Angeles love and Ecuadorian roots. Born and raised in Quito, Ecuador, Azanza spent his youth on the floor of his bedroom, teaching himself guitar and poring over bootleg CDs with music by , , and - all which gave way to the sophisticated, slightly flamboyant style that flavors The York’s tender, lighthearted tunes. As a college student in Los Angeles, Azanza began to further develop his love for music. During this time, he began playing in bands with his friends, while slowly moving away from the simpler rock compositions of his youth to more adventurous musical endeavors. All those efforts eventually made way for the creation of The Yorks in 2014 - named after a beloved mentor at Occidental College. In 2017, The Yorks saw positive reception after the release of their first self-titled EP. Produced by Chris Lynch and Adam Rasmussen of , the record sparked interest at college radio and online publications with its simultaneously lush, vivid, and often humorous lyricism. The Yorks now stands as Azanza’s solo project - encompassing all of the experiences that have made up the past several years in Los Angeles. Consisting of meditations on love and disillusionment, the new EP, Purple Sunsets, marks the transition from the band’s previous accompaniments to Azanza’s fresh solo style - a sweet, lyrically innocent sound.
